About Us

Comforting, nurturing, soul sustaining... these are some of the qualities we attribute to soup. It's only fitting that Healthy Sisters' Soup & Bean Works provides that same sustenance to the women it serves.

Sometimes making a necessary lifestyle change can seem like an overwhelming obstacle. While we like to believe that all its takes is an "attitude change" and some elbow grease, in reality, some change cannot happen without intersession.

Healthy Sisters' Soup & Bean Works responds to the needs of women from upstate New York struggling without resources and family support – women who face overwhelming obstacles to lifestyle changes.

Our sole purpose is to provide a nurturing work environment for women who come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment, poverty or displacement. Healthy Sisters' Soup & Bean Works is one of only three similar programs in the entire nation. It's an innovative work experience program where women earn a steady paycheck, develop self-confidence and learn job skills needed to enter or re-enter the workforce.

Participants are paid an hourly stipend, and are involved in all aspects of the business: production, quality assurance, marketing and inventory control. The experience is a tangible and powerful boost to the development of a woman's confidence in her own ability to support herself and her children.

Since the project was launched in 1996, more than half of the participants have found full-time employment or enrolled in school.

From Dependence to Independence...

"Now I'm able to support my children and give them a life with dignity. I feel like my life is my own again."

It's a powerful statement, but it accurately reflects the empowerment and pride experienced by any woman – who may not have believed she would ever become free of welfare support – when she receives her first stipend check from Healthy Sisters' Soup & Beans Works. It's not a gift – it's payment for work performed... part of a learning, growing, rejuvenating experience that to date has helped thousands.

Value Added

Our business objectives are two-fold:
  • To provide a successful work experience that will result in gainful employment; and
  • To generate revenue from sales in support of program operations.

Of course, our soup is good. We offer a consistent, high-quality product. Our high percentage of repeat customers attests to consumer loyalty to our product.

But you're not just buying soup – you're buying an opportunity for another human being to begin again. And that's a value at any price.
